While the national players keep their stock rising, a host of smaller grocery chains are vanishing without much fanfare.

Many have struggled with competition, changing consumer habits, or financial woes, leading to silent closures. As local favorites shutter doors, loyal shoppers find themselves chasing substitutes. Here are ten onceโ€‘common chains that are fading from Americaโ€™s grocery landscape.

Originally based in Colorado, Luckyโ€™s rapidly expanded before filing for bankruptcy in 2020. Nearly all U.S. locations have closed, leaving just a handful in Florida under new ownership. Once known for local produce and craft beer, its distinctive vibe is now rare.

Earth Fare touted organic and healthโ€‘focused groceries until it abruptly liquidated in 2020. A small group of former executives revived a few stores, but most markets remain dark. National rollout plans were scrapped, and the chainโ€™s footprint is now a fraction of its former size.

Biโ€‘Lo

Part of Southeastern Grocers, Biโ€‘Lo stores have steadily closed or rebranded since 2018 amid bankruptcy restructuring. Many former Biโ€‘Lo locations now carry the Winnโ€‘Dixie banner. Shoppers who once relied on its weekly ad finds must now adapt to new brands.

Haggen

In 2015, Haggen overreached by purchasing 146 Safeway and Vons stores, then filed for bankruptcy a year later. Today, just a handful of Haggen markets survive in Washington and California. Its ambitious expansion remains a cautionary tale in grocery M&A.

Pathmark

Once a Northeast stalwart, Pathmark was absorbed by A&P and later sold off; most stores closed by 2015. A few locations briefly revived under new banners but quietly shut thereafter. The blueโ€‘andโ€‘white Pathmark signs have all but vanished from the tristate area.

Dating back to 1859, A&P ran thousands of stores before liquidation in 2015. Its disappearance marked the end of Americaโ€™s first supermarket chain. While nostalgia remains, no original A&P aisles exist today.

Launched by Tesco in 2007, Fresh & Easy folded U.S. operations by 2013 after failing to catch on. Its distinctive smallโ€‘format stores and selfโ€‘checkout kiosks are now long gone. The brandโ€™s experiment in neighborhood groceries remains a footnote in retail history.

Also part of Southeastern Grocers, Harvey’s locations have dwindled through closures and rebrandings. Many Harvey’s stores now operate under the Winnโ€‘Dixie name or have been sold off. The Southern chainโ€™s name survives in only a handful of markets.

Specialty coโ€‘op chains like Earthโ€™s Own struggled against national organics. After years of slow sales, most locations closed by 2022, with only one cooperative site remaining in the Midwest. Its emphasis on local goods couldnโ€™t offset rising competition.

A fixture in Michigan since 1948, Owenโ€™s Market saw all locations close by early 2020 after the SpartanNash acquisition. Once prized for its hometown service and bakery, the last Owenโ€™s stores quietly shuttered. Locals still reminisce about its freshโ€‘cut deli and community feel that big chains couldnโ€™t match.
