Notes

  • You don't need to pre-soak the peas for this Crockpot black eyed peas recipe. But if you want to reduce the cooking time to 6 hours, soak the black eyed peas in a bowl of water overnight. Rinse the beans, add them to the slow cooker, and pour 5 cups of chicken broth on top, plus the other ingredients except salt.
  • How do I thicken my slow cooker black eyed peas? You can take out a cup of the beans, mash them with a fork, and stir them back into the dish. 
  • Don't like pork products? You can make your black eyed peas with smoked turkey! For a vegan version of the dish, swap the chicken broth with vegetable broth, remove the ham and bacon, and use smoked paprika or liquid smoke to give your black eyed peas a smoky flavor without meat products.
